How to Reset Your Toxic Tastebuds

Every try and start eating new things or start a new diet but  the taste is unappealing? Or do you suffer from extreme salty or sweet cravings?  Do you find yourself reaching for the salt when eating savory foods, or adding an extra spoonful or 2 of sugar to your coffee? If so, you aren’t the only one.  Your taste buds may be toxic. To begin to find more exceptionable, healthy foods taste clean and palatable, you need to detox your buds.

After the intense textures and festive flavors of the holidays even the most flavorful foods might leave you feeling unsatisfied and the reason is that your taste buds are over stimulated and need a reset. Your tongue has over 10,00 taste buds that respond to all the flavors and textures that you eat. When you constantly overload your palate with complex intense flavors your taste buds slow down and food will become less interesting to eat. During the holidays we tend to eat foods that are not only richer in spicy flavors, but that are also sweeter and have more fat. After months and months of this type of eating your taste buds are burnout and it is time to give them a break. Giving your taste buds a break will make you appreciate the flavors in the foods that you eat and prevent you from eating foods that don’t satisfy. Today I’m going to share my 5 top tips to re-set your taste buds so you’ll be able to enjoy even the most delicate of flavors.

Warm Lemon Water

Drinking a glass of warm lemon water keeps you hydrated, while neutralizing acids and bacteria in your mouth, so your palate is refreshed. To make warm lemon water, heat 10-12 ounces of water to 120 degrees and add the fresh squeezed juice of ½ a lemon.

Go Green

Greens are packed with nutrients and they have a slightly bitter taste which will help reset your taste buds, especially if you’ve really over indulged on sweets. Whether you like crunchy, sautéed or smooth greens you can easily add them to your diet with raw cucumbers, crispy kale chips, creamy spinach soup, or a green smoothie or juice.

No Processed Foods

Processed foods overload flavor and texture that lead to taste bud burnout. Packed with refined and concentrated flavors, you’ll want to replace processed foods with simple whole foods. Processed foods often contain refined sugars and starches and while they can taste good, they often are not nutrient dense, so it’s easy to over eat them. Eating whole foods doesn’t have to be complicated or fancy, trade in the crisps for a snack size bag of nuts, trade in the sweets for an orange, trade the soda in for a glass of water.

Skip the Sweets

Sugar stimulates the tastes buds and leads to burnout faster than almost any other substance. Sugar and refined sugar is found in almost all processed foods, so it’s important to read labels and avoid sugar in all forms. To retrain your taste buds on natural sweetness you can indulge in carrot juice and fruits such as bananas, melon and berries. If you need a sweetener for baking try agave, honey, maple syrup or coconut sugar.

 Oil Pulling

A clean healthy mouth, is the first step to helping your over tired and over stimulated taste buds get back to normal and as a bonus you’ll whiten your teeth in the process. Oil pulling has been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda not only for mouth health, but also for detox. For best results oil pull first thing in the morning when you wake up. Use 1 tablespoon of room temperature coconut oil and simply swish it around in your mouth. Don’t swallow the oil, and spit it out when you are done, start out swishing for 5 minutes and work your way up to 20 minutes. Rinse, floss and brush when you are done.

After 6 weeks your taste buds will reset and you should be able to eat foods that will seems fresh, appealing and be able to savor and enjoy..even a few that you did not even think you would!
